Alfalfa - the queen of forage plants

Alfalfa – the queen of forage plants

The time for the first cut of the alfalfa is approaching, the best prerequisites for top silage are the plastic bag. What do you have to consider when ensiling alfalfa?

Cutting time:

Knee high for the 1st cut

Wilting:

DM content of 35% is important to increase the sugar content. In this case – we have no juice in the bag (no losses of sugar and protein). With a DM content of more than 40%, losses (leaves) during chopping, not desirable

Compaction:

If the TS content is correct, it can also be optimally compacted (stretch marks 27cm)

Air seal:

fast airtightness until to opening 6 weeks after filling in the bag.

A suitable ensiling additive can have a positive effect on the process.

Alfalfa as a protein feed has gained in importance in last years to reduce the import of soy and the associated dependency. In Europe, 4-5 cuts are possible, with alfalfa usually being grown with a grass mixture and rarely as pure seed.
